STUDENTS’ EXPERIENCES OF DECISION-MAKING IN SELECTING AN AVIATION TRAINING PROGRAM AT THE CIVIL AVIATION TRAINING CENTER: A QUALITATIVE STUDY

Abstract
The aviation industry has experienced growing demand in the post-COVID-19 era. However, the number of applicants enrolling in aviation training programs at the Civil Aviation Training Center (CATC) has continued to decline. This qualitative study aimed to explain the decision-making experiences of student pilots in choosing to enroll in an aviation training program at CATC. The study employed a descriptive phenomenological approach based on Husserl’s perspective. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with five key informants and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The findings revealed five major dimensions influencing students’ decisions to pursue aviation training. First, financial feasibility, which included planning for living expenses during study, family financial support, viewing program costs as an investment decision, and the underlying role of family financial liquidity. Second, the quality of learning management and support systems, encompassing similarities in curriculum structures across institutions but differences in instructional models and time to program completion, the critical role of program management in determining learning success, and the importance of learning environments and safety. Third, institutional credibility, reflected in institutional reputation as a quality filter and varying perceptions of institutional image. Fourth, family as a significant driving force, including pride associated with the aspiration to become a pilot and the influence of family support alongside family concerns. Fifth, future career anticipation, in which becoming a pilot served as a primary goal, aviation programs were perceived as pathways to employment, and participants acknowledged occupational risks while maintaining hope for future opportunities. These findings provide insight into the lived experiences shaping students’ decision-making in selecting aviation training programs and offer implications for curriculum management, institutional development, and learner support systems in aviation education.
