Abstract
This study aimed to investigate structural symmetry in Chinese characters as a foundation for developing Chinese character instruction in order to enhance learners’ Chinese character writing skills. The research procedure was divided into four phases: 1) assessing writing errors before instruction, 2) classifying and analyzing 300 characters selected from the Elementary Handwritten Chinese Character List (《初等手写汉字表》), 3) conducting the teaching experiment using lesson plans validated by three experts, with an Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) ranging from 0.67 to 1.00, and 4) evaluating learning outcomes after instruction. Quantitative data were analyzed using mean (), standard deviation (S.D.), and paired-samples t-tests. The pre-instruction analysis revealed three major writing problems: incorrect stroke positioning, unbalanced components, and distorted character structures. Based on these findings, 41 Chinese characters were selected and classified into seven types of symmetry to serve as the core instructional content for classroom activities. The post-instruction results showed statistically significant improvement in writing performance, with the mean score increasing from 1.93 (SD = 0.74) before instruction to 6.43 (S.D. = 1.14) after instruction (t = −25.31, df = 29, p < .001). The findings indicated that instruction based on structural symmetry effectively improved learners’ ability to remember and write Chinese characters. It also promoted cultural understanding related to harmony and balance. However, this study involved only 30 participants and did not include a control group. Therefore, further large-scale experimental studies are recommended to examine the effectiveness of this instructional approach at a broader level
