EFFECT OF THE DUAL-TASK TRAINING PROGRAM ON THE BALANCE ABILITY OF THE ELDERLY

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of a dual-task training program (dual-task training) on balance ability in older adults. The sample comprised purposively selected older adults aged 60 - 65 years, with 20 participants assigned to the experimental group and 20 to the control group. Instruments included: 1) a fall-risk assessment for older adults; 2) a dual-task training program developed by the researcher and evaluated for appropriateness and face validity by five experts; and 3) the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) to assess balance. Data were analyzed using statistical software. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) were reported, and inferential statistics were conducted using paired t-tests to compare pre-and post - intervention scores within groups and independent t-tests to compare scores between groups. Results indicated that the experimental group who received the dual-task training showed a statistically significant improvement in balance at the .05 level. This improvement may be explained by enhanced central nervous system engagement during simultaneous cognitive and motor tasks, leading to better coordination between perception and movement and thus improved postural control. Pre-intervention comparisons showed no statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups. The findings suggest that the dual-task training program can be effectively used to promote health and prevent falls among older adults.
