Abstract

This research aimed to 1) compare the posttest learning achievement of students who learned through participatory learning combined with the Jigsaw technique with that of students who received conventional instruction; 2) compare the pretest and posttest learning achievement of students in the experimental group; 3) investigate the learning participation behaviors of students in the experimental group; and 4) examine their satisfaction with participatory learning integrated with the Jigsaw technique. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design. The sample consisted of second-year Bachelor of Education students majoring in Biology from two class sections. Using cluster random sampling, 25 students were assigned to the experimental group and 27 students to the control group. The study employed a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control-group pretest–posttest design. The research instruments comprised lesson plans for the two instructional approaches, a learning achievement test, a learning participation behavior observation form, and a satisfaction questionnaire. The data were analyzed using means, standard deviations, an independent-samples t-test, and a dependent-samples t-test. The findings revealed that 1) the experimental group achieved a significantly higher posttest mean score (equation = 24.16, S.D. = 2.75) than the control group (equation = 19.30,S.D. = 2.43) at the .05 level; 2) the experimental group’s posttest learning achievement (equation = 24.16,S.D. = 2.03) was significantly higher than its pretest achievement (equation = 13.56,S.D. = 2.55) at the .05 level (t = 22.10); 3) the experimental group demonstrated an overall high level of learning participation behavior (equation = 4.35,S.D. = 0.41) and 4) the experimental group reported the highest overall level of satisfaction with the instructional approach (equation = 4.52, S.D. = 0.38).
