EFFECTS OF PODCAST - BASED LEARNING ON ENGLISH BUSINESS TELEPHONE CONVERSATION SKILLS AND SELF - CONFIDENCE AMONG ENGLISH MAJOR STUDENTS

Abstract
This research aimed to 1) compare students' English business telephone conversation skills before and after instruction using podcasts; 2) examine the relative gain scores in English business telephone conversation skills; and 3) investigate students' confidence in English business telephone conversation. The research employed a quasi - experimental, one - group pretest - posttest design. The participants consisted of 32 third - year English major students, selected through cluster random sampling using the classroom as the sampling unit. The experiment was conducted over 8 weeks, with 2 hours per week. The research instruments consisted of: 1) podcast - based lesson plans, with the highest level of appropriateness ( = 4.64); 2) an assessment form for English business telephone conversation skills, with the highest level of appropriateness
( = 4.59); 3) a self - confidence questionnaire on English business telephone conversation, with an Index of Item - Objective Congruence (IOC) of 0.90 and a reliability coefficient of 0.85; and 4) a self - confidence interview form, with an IOC of 1.00. The data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, dependent samples t - test, relative gain scores, and content analysis. The results revealed that: 1) students' English business telephone conversation skills post - test scores (
= 81.38, S.D. = 6.11) were significantly higher than pre - test scores (
= 42.28, S.D. = 6.62), t (31) = 60.32, p < .001, at the .01 level of statistical significance; 2) students' relative gain score was at a high level (GS = 67.73); and 3) students' confidence in English business telephone conversation was at the highest level (
= 4.54, S.D. = 0.24). Interview results further indicated that students perceived increased confidence in conducting conversations
