PUBLIC PARTICIPATION AND SUSTAINABLE LOCAL DEVELOPMENT AFFECTING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN BANG PA-IN DISTRICT, PHRA NAKHON SI AYUTTHAYA PROVINCE

Abstract
This research article aimed to: 1) Examine the level of effectiveness of solid waste management; 2) Analyze public participation and sustainable local development as factors influencing the effectiveness of solid waste management; and 3) Propose guidelines for promoting public participation, local development, and the effectiveness of solid waste management in Bang Pa-in District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. A mixed-methods research approach-combining quantitative and qualitative methods-was employed. The population and sample consisted of eligible voters aged 18 and older residing in Bang Pa-in District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. Taro Yamane’s formula was used to determine the sample size: 400 individuals for the quantitative research and 20 individuals for the qualitative research (comprising the mayor, deputy mayor, deputy chief executive of the sub-district administrative organization, sub-district headman, village headman, and general public). Research instruments included questionnaires and in-depth interview forms. Data were collected through fieldwork and subsequently analyzed. Statistical analyses included: 1) Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation); and 2) Inferential statistics (multiple regression analysis). The research findings revealed that: 1) The overall effectiveness of solid waste management was at a high level, with all individual aspects also rated at a high level; and
2) Public participation and local development were overall at a high level. When analyzed by specific aspects, the results indicate a high level across all areas; and 3) Recommendations are proposed to enhance the effectiveness of solid waste management, including mechanisms for waste segregation at the source, waste processing innovations, social measures, and local municipal ordinances.
