GREEN UNIVERSITIES: PATHWAYS TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

Abstract
This paper explores the concept of green universities and their role in promoting sustainable development within higher education institutions. As global environmental challenges continue to escalate, universities are increasingly recognized as key players in driving sustainability initiatives and fostering environmental awareness. This study examines the various approaches, strategies, and best practices employed by universities worldwide to transform their campuses into environmentally friendly, resource-efficient, and socially responsible entities. By analyzing case studies, policy frameworks, and innovative programs, this research aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the green university movement and its potential to create lasting positive impact on both local and global scales. The findings suggest that successful implementation of green initiatives in universities requires a holistic approach, incorporating sustainable practices into curriculum, research, operations, and community engagement. Furthermore, this paper highlights the importance of collaboration between academic institutions, government bodies, and the private sector in achieving sustainable development goals. The conclusions drawn from this study offer valuable insights for policymakers, university administrators, and sustainability practitioners seeking to enhance the environmental performance of higher education institutions and contribute to a more sustainable future
