PROMOTING THE PRINCIPLES OF RIGHT SPEECH FOR LIVING IN A MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY OF SANTAYARAM COMMUNITY PHIMAN SUBDISTRICT MUEANG SATUN DISTRICT SATUN PROVINCE

Abstract

This article aims to study the multicultural society of the Santayaram community and promote the principles of right speech for living in a multicultural society within the Santayaram community, Phiman Subdistrict, Mueang Satun District, Satun Province This qualitative study involved a purposive sample of 20 participants: 1. Five representatives of Buddhist monks 2. Five representatives of community leaders 3. Five representatives of community elders 4. Five representatives of government officials 5. Five representatives of the general public Using interviews and content analysis, the data were presented descriptively through storytelling The results revealed that the Santayaram community is a community where Thai Buddhists, Thai Muslims, and Thai-Chinese people coexist openly, both in terms of religion and culture, with freedom of dress according to religious principles However, there are still issues of impolite communication and lack of understanding, and speech that may be offensive or discriminatory should be avoided Therefore, the use of speech in accordance with Buddhist principles, particularly the principle of right speech in Buddhism, which urges refraining from misconduct, Speak truthfully, beneficially, and appropriately to the time, place, and person. This principle has been applied to foster understanding and peace within the Santayaram community At the individual level, mindfulness and good intentions are promoted in communication At the family level, truthfulness, compassion, and respect are promoted At the community level, truthfulness, meaningfulness, and politeness are promoted, and mutual understanding of diversity are fostered The result is that community communication is mindful, polite, and respectful, especially with those of different beliefs and cultures Some families also instill in their children the use of constructive language, which contributes to peaceful coexistence in a multicultural society
