COMMUNICATING THE PERSPECTIVE OF LOVE IN CHINESE FILMS

Abstract

This research aims to 1) study the communication of love perspectives in Chinese films and 2) study the narrative of conflicts regarding love in Chinese films. This research is a qualitative study using document analysis from Chinese romantic films released between 2019-2022 that achieved box office success. There are 6 films: 1) Better Days (2019) 2) My Love (2021) 3) Love Will Tear Us Apart (2021) 4) Man In Love (2021) 5) B for Busy / Myth of Love (2021) 6) Someday or One Day (2022). The conceptual framework for the study is the concept of love and the concept of film narrative. Data analysis was performed and research data presented in a descriptive format. The research results found that: The communication of love perspectives in Chinese films has 5 issues: 1) Communication of uncommitted love (Ludus) 2) Communication of obsessive love (Mania) 3) Communication of rational love (Pragma) 4) Communication of sacrificial love (Agape) 5) Communication of passionate love (Eros). The narratives about love in Chinese films present 3 issues regarding the form of conflict in the film's storytelling: 1) Conflict between characters: This is what forms the conflict between couples who have different attitudes towards love. 2) Conflict between characters and society: This is what the characters express in resisting or rejecting society, the difference in social status. 3) Conflict between characters and themselves: This is the conflict from within themselves that requires them to decide or choose to do in order to give the best to their loved one
