Abstract

This thesis is qualitative research based on the study and compilation of data from the Tipiaka, commentaries, and related works. The objectives are, 1) to study the structure and essential content of the Puttamasa Sutta, 2) to study the principles of consuming Kavaḷīkārāhāra (physical nutriment) in the Puttamasa Sutta, and 3) to analyze the methods for consuming Kavaḷīkārāhāra as found in the Puttamasa Sutta.

The result of the study found that the Puttamasa Sutta appears in Volume 16 of the Tipiaka as the third discourse in the Mahāvagga (The Great Section) of the Sayutta-Nikāya, Nidānavagga. In this sutta, the Lord Buddha expounds on the method of contemplating the four kinds of nutriment. Regarding the principles of consuming Kavaḷīkārāhāra, he compassionately guides those who consume food that, it is important not to become too complacent with the flavour, introducing them towards the principle of moderation in eating (Bhojanemattaññutā).

The methods for consuming Kavaḷīkārāhāra (material food) shows a method of considering eighth elaborated components within two groups of concepts; 1) the true nature of food, and 2) the full understanding and the way leading to ceasing the pleasure in nutriment. Altogether, this method leads to the essential purpose of the material food according to the principle of moderation in eating.

The study also shown that Puttamasa Sutta can be implement to combat modern consumeristic issue e.g., food addiction, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by implementing the principle of moderation in eating (Bhojanemattaññutā).to improve sustainable consumption as individual and as a society.

This thesis serves as valuable guide to foster a correct understanding in buddist teachings and daily implementation to improve modern consumeristic behavior
