Abstract

Abstract

This research article aimed to: 1) study the use of Facebook in enhancing creative Thai writing skills among upper secondary school students, 2) analyze Facebook usage behaviors affecting the development of creative Thai writing skills, and 3) propose guidelines for developing creative Thai writing through Facebook. The sample consisted of 40 upper secondary students from Surasak Wittayakhom School, Chonburi Province. Data were collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and activity-based assessments.

              The findings revealed that:

Students frequently used Facebook for educational purposes (mean = 4.17), particularly for supplementary research (mean = 4.30) and teacher consultations (mean = 3.75). Entertainment-related usage (mean = 4.17), such as watching movies, listening to music, and socializing, as well as communication purposes (mean = 3.98), including online chats and academic updates, were also prevalent.

In-depth interviews with parents, teachers, and students indicated positive attitudes toward Facebook as a learning tool, citing its accessibility and ability to engage learners. Recommendations included promoting educational pages/groups, assigning writing tasks tailored to social media contexts, and organizing creative discussion activities to enhance Thai language proficiency. However, challenges such as informal youth slang (mean = 3.47) and incomplete communication (mean = 3.10) were identified.

Proposed development strategies included structured Facebook writing activities, such as lesson summaries, creative captions, and collaborative feedback exchanges, alongside teacher and parental supervision to ensure a safe learning environment. The study concludes that Facebook holds potential as an effective tool for developing creative Thai writing skills, provided activities are well-designed and language use is constructively guided.
