SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT FOR STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY IDENTITY

Abstract

This academic article aims to analyze integrated social development processes focused on strengthening community identity for sustainability amidst the crisis of globalization. The core of this development lies in a paradigm shift: moving away from a narrow focus on mainstream economic growth indicators toward development rooted in cultural capital and local wisdom. By employing Community-Centered Development and Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) frameworks, spiritual values are transformed into robust symbolic capital, enhancing the community's bargaining power in modern social spaces. The critical development process comprises four systematically interconnected pillars: 1) Co-decisional participation to foster a sense of ownership and value awareness; 2) The preservation and advancement of cultural heritage into "Living Heritage" that remains contemporary and globally relevant; 3) The elevation of the creative economy through storytelling techniques to convert cultural capital into tangible economic value; and 4) Environmental resource management aligned with traditional ways of life and indigenous wisdom. These mechanisms facilitate the accumulation of social capital, cultivate self-pride, and serve as a social shield that enhances long-term self-management and self-reliance. Furthermore, the public sector should transition into a supportive role of a facilitator by decentralizing power and protecting community rights. This includes establishing intergenerational learning spaces via digital media and promoting Participatory Action Research (PAR) to evaluate the quality of life. Ultimately, communities that intelligently balance global and local elements (Glocalization) will emerge as a resilient foundation, standing with dignity on the international stage.
