บทความวิชาการนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา วิเคราะห์วัฒนธรรม และภูมิปัญญาหัตถกรรมจักสานเสื่อใบเตยในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ สู่แนวทางการพัฒนา และต่อยอดภูมิปัญญาหัตถกรรมจักสานเสื่อใบเตยของไทย โดยมีข้อสมมติฐานในการศึกษาว่าหัตถกรรมจักสานเสื่อใบเตยในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้มีวัฒนธรรม และภูมิปัญญาที่สัมพันธ์หรือเชื่อมโยงซึ่งกันและกัน มีขั้นตอนศึกษาโดยทบทวนเอกสารข้อมูลที่เกี่ยวข้อง และวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยแยกเป็นประเด็นที่สำคัญเพื่อให้เห็นข้อมูลที่สรุปในเชิงเปรียบเทียบอย่างชัดเจนและนำไปสู่การสร้างข้อสรุป ผลการศึกษาสรุปเป็น 4 ด้าน คือ 1) ด้านสายพันธุ์เตยที่ใช้หัตถกรรมจักสาน ต้นเตยเป็นพืชตระกูลปาล์ม มี 700 กว่าสายพันธุ์ ในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้มีสายพันธุ์ที่ใช้ในงานจักสานที่แตกต่างกันซึ่งในประเทศไทยมีสายพันธุ์ Pandanus odorifer หรือภาษาท้องถิ่นเรียก “เตยปาหนัน” 2) ด้านภูมิปัญญาในการทำหัตถกรรมจักสาน มีการใช้ทั้งใบเตยแบบสดมาจักสาน และใบเตยแบบสดที่ผ่านกระบวนการความร้อนเพื่อให้ใบเตยมีความนิ่มแล้วจึงนำมากรีดเป็นเส้นตอก การแช่ด้วยน้ำ การนำไปตากให้แห้ง การนำไปย้อมสี และการทำให้แห้งอีกครั้งก่อนนำมาจักสาน ช่างจักสานทุกพื้นที่เป็นเพศหญิง ส่วนใหญ่สืบสานภูมิปัญญาจากแม่ มักใช้สีสันที่สดใสและสานด้วยลายเรขาคณิต 3) ด้านวัฒนธรรมการใช้เสื่อใบเตย มีวัฒนธรรมการปูเสื่อเพื่อรองนั่ง และรองนอนในชีวิตประจำวัน การใช้ในพิธีการต่าง ๆ เช่น งานแต่งงาน การใช้ในพิธีศพ 4) ความเปลี่ยนแปลงในวิถีการใช้เสื่อใบเตย การใช้เสื่อใบเตยถูกลดบทบาทเนื่องจากวิถีชีวิตใหม่จากการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางเศรษฐกิจ และสังคมสมัยใหม่ วัฒนธรรมการใช้เสื่อแบบดั้งเดิมลดลง วัสดุที่มีราคาถูกเข้ามาแทนที่จึงควรมีการพัฒนาต่อยอดวัฒนธรรม และภูมิปัญญาหัตถกรรมจักสานเสื่อใบเตยในเชิงสร้างสรรค์
