Abstract

The Pariyatti Dhamma Schools (General Education Division) play a crucial role in Thailand’s monastic education system by integrating secular knowledge with Buddhist moral instruction. These institutions serve as unique centers for both academic development and ethical cultivation among Buddhist monks, novices, and youth in local communities. Despite their significance, many of these schools face structural and administrative challenges that undermine their efficiency and long-term sustainability.

This article examines critical issues in the existing organizational structure and management practices, such as centralized decision-making, lack of community engagement, shortage of qualified personnel, budget constraints, and weak linkages with external agencies. The article proposes a framework for improving governance by incorporating principles of modern management and sustainable organizational development. Emphasis is placed on decentralization, strategic planning, stakeholder participation, capacity building, community collaboration, and the integration of digital technology to support administration and instruction.

Concrete policy recommendations are provided for governing monastic authorities, the Ministry of Education, and school-level administrators to implement systemic reforms. The proposed framework aims to enhance educational quality, instill moral integrity in youth, strengthen community networks, and align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Communities). This article thus contributes new insights toward holistic and culturally grounded school governance that supports both educational excellence and long-term social sustainability.
