PUBLIC POLICY ON HOUSING IN THAILAND

Abstract

This article provides a study of the development of public housing policy in Thailand, tracing its evolution from its inception to the present day. The analysis draws upon historical documents, scholarly articles, government reports, and policy documents to explore the key drivers, challenges, and transformations that have shaped public housing policy in Thailand. The historical context reveals early initiatives aimed at addressing housing shortages, leading to the establishment of the National Housing Authority (NHA) and the emergence of formal housing policies. The article discusses shifts in policy focus, from low-cost housing to social housing, influenced by political regimes and community-based approaches. Despite successes in expanding access to affordable housing and empowering communities, persistent challenges such as rapid urbanization, informal settlements, affordability constraints, and sustainability issues remain. Current trends highlight the integration of technology, emphasis on sustainability, and inclusive approaches to housing policy formulation and implementation. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of continued innovation, collaboration, and policy reform to create resilient, inclusive, and sustainable housing systems that meet the diverse needs of Thailand's growing population
