Abstract

This research aims to study some of the causal factors that result in self-compassion amongst Thai activists as they face social obstacles. This study used qualitative, in-depth interviews and analyzed the content thereof for results.  Key informants were seven Thai activists: political, human rights and environmental activists. The results found that causal factors for self-compassion could be classified in 2 main groups: (1) internal factors, including self-awareness, self-control, self-reflection, optimism, and empathy, and (2) external factors including (2.1) social support and role models, both considered as social factors, and (2.2) situational factors, in this case, social crisis. These findings suggest that these factors potentially influence the development of self-compassion and could be used to further develop programs to encourage self-compassion among activists and/or in relevant organizations.
