Abstract

Abstract

Instagram is among the top three most-used applications in Thailand. This study examined the relationship between the importance of Instagram and self-esteem, with social comparison as a mediating variable. The sample consisted of 207 undergraduate students from Kasetsart University, collected using a convenience sampling method via an online questionnaire. Research instruments included the Instagram Importance Questionnaire (α = 0.823), the Social Comparison Scale (α = 0.929), and the Self-Esteem Scale (α = 0.877). Data was analyzed using the PROCESS macro in SPSS. The findings revealed that the importance of Instagram did not directly affect self-esteem (β = -0.12, p > 0.05). However, it negatively impacted self-esteem through upward social comparison with more successful individuals (β = -0.4380***, p < 0.001). In contrast, the importance of Instagram did not affect self-esteem through downward social comparison with less successful individuals (β = 0.1535, p = 0.07). These results highlight the role of social media in triggering social comparisons, particularly upward comparisons with more successful individuals, which can lower users’ self-esteem. This study underscores the importance of raising awareness about responsible social media use to mitigate negative effects and promote positive engagement. The findings contribute to understanding how Instagram usage influences self-esteem and social comparison processes, providing insights for future interventions aimed at fostering healthier Instagram habits.
