The Creational Design Pattern of Sabai Mon from the Cultural Capital of Pathum Thani Province

Abstract

Sabai Mon is a unique costume of Mon people especially in Pathum Thani province where there are many Thai people of Mon descent. The purposes of this research were to study Sabai Mon and the cultural capital of Pathum Thani Province, and to design and create a new Sabai Mon prototype that represents the identity of the cultural capital of Pathum Thani Province. The researcher used a qualitative research method in surveying and collecting data on Sabai Mon and the cultural capital of Pathum Thani Province, the concept of contemporary cultural capital, the globalization and localization concept and the pattern design theory together. The quantitative research method was also employed by using questionnaires, scoring based on in-depth interviewed with the experts in each field. The study found that the motifs of Sabai Mon, Pathum Thani Province consist of the floral patterns created in the form of applied patterns from real objects (27.7%), from combining patterns from imagination (27.2%), and from the cultural capital patterns, from the form of geometric patterns (29%) and applied patterns from real objects (25.8%). The important design elements in Sabai Mon were the silhouette, patterns, colors, decorative details on the fabric, and the materials. The researcher relied on the EDFR prospective research technique by judging the Sabai Mon image style again from a panel of experts to develop a new style of Sabai Mon that reflected the contemporary and unique style that were different from the others, in order to continue the local wisdom and improve the products of the community in Pathum Thani province.
