Attitude and Behavior Towards English Language Use Among Students at the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon

Abstract

The following survey research paper was intended to 1) investigate students’ attitude and behavior towards the use of English and 2) explore the relationship between their attitude and behavior towards such use. Employing a convenience sampling technique, a questionnaire was distributed to 262 first-year to senior students at the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon (RMUTP). The statistics performed included percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. A Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation test was conducted to study the relationship between the two variables.

          The results revealed that the English language was perceived to be somewhat beneficial and have been used rather frequently, resulting in the median at 4.16. Considering in detail, it was found that the English language was perceived to be able to pave the way for greater career opportunities (x̄ = 4.47), play a vital role in everyday communication (x̄ = 4.45), and help the students gain access to more information (x̄ = 4.42). In terms of the students’ overall perceived use of English, it was found to be at a high level (x̄ = 3.89), and their attitude and behavior towards the use of English were found to be positively correlated (p < .05).
