Abstract

This study aims to 1) categorize the types of pronouns used in popular songs performed by Thai singers, and 2) analyze the frequency of pronoun usage in these songs. The data sample was selected through purposive sampling, with data collected from the website www.joox.com/th, which is one of the largest online music streaming platforms in Thailand. A total of 23 pronouns were identified, appearing 3,361 times in total. The statistical method used for data analysis was percentage. The findings revealed that pronouns in Thai popular songs can be classified into four types, ranked in descending order of frequency as follows: personal pronouns (80.93%), indefinite pronouns (12.02%), reciprocal pronouns (3.72%), and definite pronouns (3.33%). In summary, popular songs tend to employ personal pronouns most frequently in order to emphasize the relationship among the sender, the receiver, and the referent. Moreover, pronouns in popular Thai songs serve as indicators of communication direction that primarily focuses on the listener, playing a crucial role in establishing emotional and cognitive connections. The findings of this study may provide useful insights for songwriters and music producers in selecting appropriate pronouns that correspond to their target audiences, thereby enhancing emotional resonance, interpersonal relationships, and mutual understanding between singers and listeners.
