Parental Involvement: A Delicate Balance
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article investigates the multifaceted impact of parental involvement on child development, analyzing three principal dimensions: 1) its effects on children, encompassing both academic achievement and social skills; 2) the quality of home-school relationships; and 3) the consequences for parents themselves. This study, conducted through a comprehensive literature review and synthesis of existing research on parental involvement, specifically aims to identify what forms of parental engagement can effectively foster children's academic success and essential socio-emotional skills for future life achievements, without causing detrimental effects to any stakeholders. The findings reveal that truly effective and appropriate parental involvement necessitates a balanced approach, prioritizing quality over mere quantity. This involves empowering children to develop self-management skills suited to their age, alongside promoting consistent and effective communication between parents and schools. Crucially, however, such involvement must not become an undue burden on parents themselves. Therefore, the choice of involvement strategies should align with the unique context and specific needs of each family and child. Understanding these factors is pivotal for developing sustainable strategies that promote children's learning and holistic development. Ultimately, this article offers valuable guidance to parents, educators, and all relevant parties in collaboratively cultivating a supportive learning environment conducive to maximizing children's potential.
