THE IMPACT OF GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
Keywords:
Artificial Intelligence, English Language Learning, Educational TechnologyAbstract
This academic article aims to analyze the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on English language learning in contemporary educational contexts. Specifically, AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are rapidly transforming language teaching and learning. This study employs a systematic literature review methodology, examining academic documents, books, scholarly articles, and research papers to synthesize knowledge about the opportunities and challenges of this technology.
The study found that generative AI offers significant opportunities in several areas. It improves efficiency in practicing English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills by providing instant feedback and creating learning environments that adapt to individual learner needs. It enables unlimited access to learning resources regardless of time and location, and it reduces anxiety in using English. AI supports independent learning, increases learning motivation through engaging interactions, and gives learners opportunities to experience communication in real-life situations. However, using AI also presents challenges, such as data accuracy issues, over-reliance on technology that may reduce critical thinking skills, ethical concerns about plagiarism and academic integrity, inequality in technology access, and data privacy concerns.
Integrating Artificial Intelligence into English language teaching and learning should be done carefully. There must be clear policy development, practical guidelines, and teacher training in digital competencies to fully utilize the technology's potential. Future research should focus on long-term evaluation of AI's impact on learning outcomes and develop implementation approaches suitable for the Thai educational context.
