Environmental degradation caused by human activities is a critical global concern. Consequently, environmental conservation and ecosystem protection have become key priorities within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Promoting environmental literacy from early childhood is therefore essential, particularly through the roles of families and educational institutions, which constitute the microsystems that most directly influence children's development. This article aims to provide guidelines for families and educational institutions to foster environmental literacy in early childhood based on Ecological Systems Theory. Environmental literacy, encompassing knowledge, attitudes, skills, and environmentally responsible behaviors, contributes to the adoption of environmentally sustainable lifestyles. According to Ecological Systems Theory, children's development, learning, and everyday experiences are shaped by five interconnected systems: the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem. Therefore, families and educational institutions should promote environmental literacy in early childhood by considering four key components: (1) Process, through meaningful learning experiences and direct engagement with the environment; (2) Person, through the roles of adults as role models, facilitators, and motivators; (3) Context, through opportunities to learn from and interact with surrounding and natural environments; and (4) Time, through consideration of developmental stages and changing environmental issues over time.
