Developing CLT-Based English Writing Workbooks to Enhance English Academic Achievement and Learning Retention for Grade 6 Students

This study aimed to: (1) develop and evaluate the efficiency of a CLT-based English writing skills workbook according to the 80/80 criterion; (2) compare students’ achievement in English before and after instruction; and (3) examine learning retention. The participants were 11 Grade 6 students at Ban Nondoo School during the first semester of the 2025 academic year. The study employed a one-group pretest–posttest–follow-up pre-experimental design. The research instruments consisted of The Adjective Rangers, a CLT-based English writing skills workbook comprising eight learning units, and a 30-item four-option multiple-choice English achievement test with IOC values ranging from 0.60 to 1.00, difficulty indices from 0.33 to 0.77, discrimination indices from 0.41 to 0.82, and a reliability coefficient of 0.89. Data were analyzed using efficiency indices, mean, standard deviation, paired-samples t-test, and repeated-measures ANOVA.
The findings revealed that:
1. The CLT-based English writing skills workbook achieved an efficiency rating of 87.94/88.39, exceeding the established 80/80 criterion.
2. Post-test scores (M = 24.18, SD = 1.83) were significantly higher than pre-test scores (M = 7.73, SD = 1.68) at the .01 level of statistical significance.
3. Significant differences were found among the pre-test, post-test, and follow-up scores. However, the follow-up scores (M = 23.91, SD = 1.30) did not differ significantly from the post-test scores, indicating retention of learning over time.
