Development of Local Wisdom-Based Innovations to Enhance Competitiveness and Sustainability of the Organic Forest Coffee Enterprise in Ban Pok Community, Chiang Mai Province
Abstract
This research aims to: (1) examine the factors influencing the development of local wisdom–based innovation in the organic forest coffee enterprise of Ban Pok Community, Mae On District, Chiang Mai Province; (2) analyze the relationships between these factors and both product and process innovations; and (3) synthesize guidelines to enhance capacity, strengthen competitiveness, and ensure the sustainability of community coffee enterprises across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. This study is an applied research conducted in the form of research and development (R&D), employing a mixed-methods approach. The quantitative component involved data collection from a sample of 145 respondents selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The qualitative component utilized semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with 18 key informants selected through purposive sampling. The qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.
The findings indicate that the overall level of factors influencing local wisdom–based innovation is high. Member participation, social capital, and collaboration with external networks emerge as the most influential factors. Correlation analysis further reveals that all factors are positively and significantly associated with innovation development. Notably, social capital demonstrates the strongest relationship, followed by external network collaboration and member participation, across both product and process innovation dimensions. Furthermore, the synthesized development guidelines can be categorized into three key dimensions: (1) governance-based management, which enhances transparency, trust, and organizational capacity; (2) product and process development grounded in local knowledge and integrated with appropriate technology, contributing to value creation, cost reduction, and quality improvement; and (3) marketing and communication through digital media and eco-tourism, which expand market access, increase consumer awareness, and reinforce the distinctive identity of community coffee products in a sustainable manner.
