An Analysis of Methods for Cultivating Gratitude among Youth in Thai Society

Abstract

              This research, entitled "An Analysis of Methods for Cultivating Gratitude among Youth in Thai Society," aimed to achieve three objectives: (1) to investigate the problems and obstacles in cultivating gratitude among youth in Nakhon Ratchasima Province; (2) to examine the methods and factors contributing to the cultivation of gratitude among youth in Nakhon Ratchasima Province; and (3) to analyze effective approaches for cultivating gratitude among youth in the province.

              This study employed a qualitative research methodology. Data were collected primarily through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The key informants consisted of 30 youths aged between 15 and 22 years residing in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The participants were selected using purposive sampling to ensure diversity in terms of gender, age, educational background, occupation, and place of residence.

    The findings revealed that the problems and obstacles in cultivating gratitude existed at five levels. First, at the individual level, many youths had misconceptions about gratitude and lacked intrinsic motivation. Second, at the family level, changes in family structure and parents' limited time for moral guidance hindered the development of gratitude. Third, at the educational level, schools tended to place excessive emphasis on academic achievement while neglecting moral development. Fourth, at the community level, weakened community relationships and changing social values reduced opportunities for cultivating gratitude. Fifth, at the technological and media level, digital media exerted both positive and negative influences on youths' attitudes and behaviors. The study further identified several effective methods for cultivating gratitude, including exemplary role modeling by adults, fostering warm family relationships, integrating gratitude-related content into teaching and learning processes, organizing creative and experiential activities, promoting appropriate use of technology, and strengthening collaboration among social institutions. Based on the findings, the researcher synthesized an "Ecological Model of Gratitude Cultivation" grounded in Buddhist principles and aligned with the Thai social context. The model comprises six fundamental principles and a five-step implementation process. Case studies conducted in schools, communities, and temples demonstrated that the model is practical, applicable, and capable of producing positive outcomes. This research contributes significantly to the development of policies and practical guidelines for systematically and sustainably cultivating gratitude among Thai youth.
