Study of the Influence of Beliefs in the Vessantara Jataka on the Development of Temples in Chaiyaphum Province

Abstract

This research aims to achieve three primary objectives: 1) to examine the beliefs and practices regarding the Vessantara Jataka; 2) to investigate the annual Mahachaat sermon tradition organized by the Buddhist clergy in Chaiyaphum Province; and 3) to analyze the influence of Vessantara Jataka beliefs on temple development in Chaiyaphum Province. Utilizing a qualitative research design, data were collected through field-study interviews with 15 key informants in Kud Chum Saeng Sub-district, Nong Bua Daeng District, Chaiyaphum Province. The participants, selected via purposive sampling based on the specific research criteria, consisted of 5 Buddhist monks and 10 general citizens.

The results of the research found that 1) English Translation Beliefs surrounding the Vessantara Jataka in Chaiyaphum Province are deeply rooted in the concept of "The Perfection of Generosity" (Dana Parami). In particular, the conviction that completing the hearing of the Great Birth Sermon (Thet Mahachat) within a single day grants the merit necessary for rebirth in the era of Phra Sri Ariya Metteyya (the future Buddha) has shaped unique religious practices. These include the transmission of Dhamma through sacred arts, traditional chanting, and the reenactment of various episodes from the Jataka cantos.

2 ) Buddhist monks in Chaiyaphum play a pivotal role as spiritual leaders and guardians of the "Boon Pawet" (Great Birth Festival) tradition. They preserve unique homiletic styles, such as the Isan-style melody (Thet Sangkas), and oversee traditional ceremonies like the grand procession of Prince Vessantara’s return to the city. Furthermore, the transformation of the multipurpose hall (Sala Kan Parian) into a symbolic Himavanta Forest serves as a vital social mechanism, fostering profound unity between the temple and the local community.

3) The influence of Vessantara Jataka beliefs directly impacts temple development across multiple dimensions. In terms of physical infrastructure, the Thet Mahachat serves as a major fundraising platform for the construction and renovation of monastic buildings. In the administrative dimension, this "cultural capital" is utilized as a focal point for participatory temple management. Consequently, temples have evolved into centers for lifelong learning and cultural tourism, strengthening the resilience and sustainability of Buddhist institutions in Chaiyaphum Province.
