A Study on Learning Achievement and Retention in the Blended Basic First Aid Course of the Thai Red Cross Society

This study aimed to compare the learning achievement of trainees in the blended basic first aid training program before and after the course, examine knowledge retention four weeks after training, and explore trainee satisfaction with the program. The blended learning approach combined online media with face-to-face practical training. The sample consisted of 40 participants aged 25–40 years from the general population who had not attended any first aid training in the past five years, selected through purposive sampling. Research instruments included the blended basic first aid training program, achievement tests, retention tests, and satisfaction questionnaires. Data were collected before training, immediately after training, and four weeks after training. Statistical analyses employed the dependent t-test to compare pre- and post-test scores, and repeated measures ANOVA to compare scores across three time points: (1) before training, (2) immediately after training, and (3) four weeks after training.
The results indicated that trainees achieved significantly higher learning outcomes after training compared to before (p < .001). Knowledge scores at four weeks did not decline from immediate post-training scores (p < .001), demonstrating strong learning retention. Theoretical scores were positively correlated with practical scores, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.82, indicating a high and statistically significant relationship. Trainees reported high satisfaction with the program, with average satisfaction scores across all aspects exceeding 80 percent.
In conclusion, the blended learning approach that integrates online instruction with practical training effectively enhances learning achievement and promotes knowledge retention. It is recommended that this approach be applied to other first aid and health training programs to improve learning efficiency, effectiveness, and applicability in real-life contexts.
