Philosophical Hermeneutics in Metta toward the Animals

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to philosophical hermeneutics to create a new explanation of Metta toward animals. This research was qualitative research using philosophical research methods. Collecting the main information in the document, leads to Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics according to the theory of fusion of horizons according to the reader. The research results found that: 1. The essence of animals has 3 statuses: 1) They are things because there is the view that animals have life but do not have souls; 2) animals have life and have souls, but at a low level; and 3) animals have life and souls like humans.2. The value of animals has three levels: 1) belonging; 2) ownership; and 3) companionship. 3. Metta for animals is an important virtue that humans should practice regularly. There are 2 levels: 1) Being kind to animals in the form of a human-animal (I-It) relationship, focusing on providing care, and giving freedom to animals; and 2) being kind to animals in the form of a I-You relationship, treating animals with respect, friendly to each other and do not harm each other. The results of this research can be used as a basis for understanding the basis of Metta towards animals in many circumstances.
