Development of Reading and Writing Skills Words with the Replacement of Thai Vowels through Color Changing Ruler for Children with Learning Disabilities, Banlaopao School, Doi Lo, Chiang Mai

Abstract

             This research aimed to 1) study the effects of developing reading and writing skills for words with vowel transformations using the Color-Coded Transforming Ruler learning media for children with learning disabilities, and 2) examine the satisfaction of children with learning disabilities toward using the Color-Coded Transforming Ruler learning media. The target group consisted of two Grade 6 students in the second semester of the 2024 academic year, selected through purposive sampling. They were screened using the KUSSI Rating Scales: ADHD/LD/Autism(PDDs) and a learning disabilities screening tool. A quasi-experimental design was employed. The research instruments included 1) a student baseline assessment form and an Individualized Education Program (IEP), 2) twelve Individualized Instructional Plans (IIPs), each lasting 60 minutes, 3) Color-Coded Transforming Ruler learning media using a color-coding system for consonants, vowels, and final consonants with accompanying images, 4) pre- and post-tests, 5) a structured behavioral observation form, and 6) a semi-structured satisfaction interview form. Data analysis utilized IOC values, means, percentages, and content analysis. The findings revealed that: 1) the reading development scores for words with vowel transformations for both students averaged 4.66 and 4.41 respectively, while writing development scores averaged 4.91 and 4.83 respectively, indicating excellent levels and meeting the 80% criterion, 2) in reading, Student 1 showed 20% improvement and Student 2 showed 80% improvement; in writing, Student 1 demonstrated 95% improvement and Student 2 showed 80% improvement, and 3) both target students expressed satisfaction with the Color-Coded Transforming Ruler learning media due to its appeal, ease of use, portability, safety, and effectiveness in facilitating word memorization and comprehension.
