The Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy and Buddhist Philosophy for Sustainable Development

Abstract

The purposes of this article were: 1) to study the philosophy of sufficiency economy 2) to study the Buddhist philosophy for sustainable development. The results of the study showed that the philosophy of sufficiency economy is present modesty, reasonableness, and good self-immunity. The Buddhist philosophy related to the philosophy of sufficiency economy; there are 3 aspects were concerned, Santosa 3 (Contentment): Yathalabha-Santosa (contentment with what one gets and deserves to get), Yathabala-Santosa (contentment with what is within one?s the strength or capacity), Yathasaruppa-Santosa (contentment with what is befitting) Furthermore, there is another doctrine was concerned which is Gharavasa-dhamma 4 (virtues for good household life): Sacca (truth and honesty), Dama (adjustment), Khanti (forbearance) Caga (generosity). When people had lived with the philosophy of sufficiency economy and Buddhist philosophy it would inevitably have caused sustainable development.
